LOST IN THE WOODS · ENTRY 001
A quiet moment of creative reflection

the quiet death of a creative person

on corporate life, creative exhaustion, and trying to find your way back to yourself.

There's a particular kind of exhaustion that comes from spending your entire day being "useful" and coming home or logging off with no energy to do something that actually matters to you.

I don't think I realized how much corporate life could take from me until I started noticing what was disappearing. I can do my job and do it well. I have a paycheck that affords me a comfortable life.

But I've lost me.

I've lost the creative parts of me. The part that wants to write stories at 2 a.m. because an idea won't leave her alone. The part that can't wait to strum her guitar and sing a tune she wrote. The part that wants to make videos and take pictures and build tiny worlds on the internet. The part that wants to dance around her room by candlelight to a Stevie Nicks song. The part that sees the magic in everything around me.

Those parts of me are still there, and that's almost the worst part. I still have the ideas, I just don't have the energy. I spend most of my waking hours doing things that are necessary, practical, measurable, and completely disconnected from the things that make me feel alive. My life is nothing but a series of emails, meetings, deadlines, forced small talk, problems that need solving, other people's priorities and emergencies.

Be useful, be professional, be efficient, be available. Do it correctly, do it faster. Rarely a please or a thank you. Just do.

Then, after giving away most of myself for the day, I'm supposed to log off and somehow be creative with what little time I have left of my day. Of my freedom. Of my life.

Sometimes I sit down at my computer with every intention of continuing a story, and just stare at the screen. I know what to say, I have entire stories living in my head. I have blog posts half-written in my notes app. Video ideas. Characters. Scenes. Photographs I want to take and things I want to make. And yet, many times the most I can manage is scrolling mindlessly until it's time to go to bed. Then I feel guilty and ashamed and like I'm wasting my life. Because really, I am.

I wanted to create something. I'm supposed to be doing something I love.

Why can't I just do it?

I think that's the wrong question, though.

I think the real question is: what happens when you spend over forty hours a week in an environment that requires you to suppress so much of yourself, and then expect the tiny amount of energy you have left to somehow become art?

Creativity needs room. Creativity needs curiosity and boredom and wandering and daydreaming and room for mistakes. It needs time to follow an idea simply because you can.

Corporate life doesn't encourage those things. There's something especially painful about being a creative person in a job that doesn't care about your creativity. In a world that simply doesn't care.

Not because creativity makes you special, and not because everyone needs to quit their job and become an artist.

Perhaps because when you're only regarded for being productive, efficient and useful, it's very easy to start believing anything you do, simply because you love it, is a waste of time.

I've started to hate that. I've started to hate the idea that every little thing needs to be justified by what it produces, what it accomplishes, or how it benefits someone else.

I don't want every part of my life to have purpose. I don't want to monetize every hobby. I don't want to turn every creative impulse into a side hustle because I feel like I have to.

I just want to make things. I want to create things. I want to madly pursue something because I'm passionate about it. I want to be messy and chaotic. I want a life that isn't entirely about being useful.

Most importantly, I want to be free.

⋆。°✩ ☾ ✩°。⋆

I've disappeared underneath the person I'm required to be at work, at this game called life, and that's what scares me the most. I can tolerate being tired, or having a bad week. I can tolerate being annoyed with my job or my coworkers.

What I can't ever see myself being okay with is the feeling I'm spending so much of my life doing something that leaves so little of me behind. I don't want to wake up one day and realize I spent most of my years answering emails and putting out fires. I don't want to become someone who stopped making things because she was always too tired.

Maybe that's why I'm writing this, because even if I don't know exactly how to change my life yet, I don't want to stop reminding myself that this person is still here. The creative, silly, weird me. The me who gets excited about fairytales and trinkets and coloring books and little details and impossible ideas.

She isn't gone completely, not yet.

She's just exhausted.

I don't think I've totally lost my creativity, but I am surviving on scraps. So for now, I'm working to try and get some of that back. To stoke the fire that fuels my creative self. Small things like a fantasy TikTok edit, a blog post, a few pages of my newest story written. Anything that reminds me that my life is supposed to belong to me.

[ PERSONAL REMINDER ]

I don't want a life that looks good on paper if I have to sacrifice the very parts of myself that make me who I am to make it work.

a little bit about hobbies...

✦ FIELD NOTES FROM THE WOODS ✦

As someone with ADHD, I naturally have a lot of hobbies. Some I dive deep into, others I start and recklessly abandon a week or two later. I like to call myself a jack of all trades, a master of none...

Being autistic for me also means I have a few hobbies which are actually special interests. They're lifelong, intense interests. Which is kind of cool in my opinion...

I wanted to share a bit about myself by introducing some of my favorite hobbies and special interests!

‧₊˚🖇️✩ SPECIAL INTERESTS ₊˚🎧⊹ ♡

#1: MUSIC ♫

Music has been a passion of mine for as long as I can remember. Listening to music, singing, playing various instruments, dancing, and going to concerts have taken up a lot of my life.

One of my favorite lines from a song explains it perfectly: "Never could I tell you what music means to me. It's like trying to describe a sunrise. As words bleed to skin, it shows it makes a difference. I feel alive in the sound of the melody." (Melody Save Me, Worthwhile)

Funny they talk about words bleed to skin — I actually have a tattoo referencing this song with the words "Melody Save Me." See? Obsessed.

My music taste is vast. Anything from bluegrass and folk to pop punk, hardcore, and dad rock.

#2: READING / BOOKS 📚

Reading is another lifelong special interest of mine. Being able to forget about whatever troubles ail me in reality and escape to a fantasy land where I can be whoever and accomplish whatever has always been a safe space for me.

Just like music, reading has been critical for me during the hardest times of my life.

Naturally, being so interested in reading, I have amassed quite a large collection of books since childhood. I have books lining the bookshelves of my home, stacked in corners, stacked in the living room and in boxes at my parents' house. I live in a small home, so there's absolutely NO more room to put books... yet I still buy more! My TBR list is miles long, but there's nothing like the beauty (and smell) of physical books.

✩ ♬ ₊. HOBBIES 🎧⋆☾⋆⁺₊✧

#1: VIDEO GAMES 🎮

I've always loved video games since I received my Nintendo DS when I was a child. Mario Kart, Kirby, Nintendogs, you name it! I also had various other consoles, from educational ones to silly ones. I love being able to accomplish something while also escaping to a different world!

I've since graduated from the Nintendo DS to a Nintendo Switch and Xbox. I received my first Xbox from a dear friend when I was a freshman in high school. Before that, my brother and I would fight over who got to use his. I even met some friends at the end of middle school and early high school on Xbox Live, and we spent many nights playing Black Ops 1 Zombies. They were from Ohio and they had also become dear friends. You never forget the homies you met on Xbox Live years and years ago. I often wonder how they're doing.

Games I enjoy playing lately include Fortnite (classic), Minecraft (another classic) and Call of Duty (newest: MW4). I go through periods where I play each one for months and then move on to another. For example, in 2024, I spent a month playing CoD MW3, and then once I gave up on the camo grind, moved on to Diablo IV. My builds were so overpowered it wasn't even fun after spending week after week perfecting my Necromancer or Sorcerer.

#2: LEARNING NEW INSTRUMENTS 🎻

I love learning new instruments. Currently, I play acoustic guitar, electric guitar, piano, flute, and banjo. I'm also teaching myself the violin (NOT the easiest...). I love anything that has to do with real, raw music.

#3: WRITING ✍️

As well as reading, I've always loved to write stories. Silly little short stories or longer novellas. Right now, I have around 5 books started. Sometimes I despise having ADHD, as it feels like I'll never be able to finish a single book. Once I really get going on one, I suddenly have a great idea for another one and pivot.

Writing is something I've also used as an escape. While writing, I'm able to escape my normal, perhaps stressful life and focus on building a world I want to live in. Vivid dreams and nightmares have also been turned into book ideas.

#4: JOURNALING 📓

I've recently picked back up on journaling. Since I loved to write, I frequently asked for diaries as presents or bought them with my chore money when I was younger. I'd fill the pages with hopes and dreams and nonsense. I stopped journaling for quite a while when life got really hard. I'm happy I'm getting back into it, because it REALLY does help... I can write whatever I want and think through things at my own pace. My journal doesn't judge me.

🍄 I know the world can feel heavy, but please don't forget to spend time on your hobbies.

☾ welcome to the woods ⋆。°✩

Field notes from a creature who was never quite built for the human world.

Hello, wandering creature. ♡

You found me.

Welcome to Cryptid Behavior, a little corner of the internet for the strange, the curious, the easily distracted, and the things that go bump in the night.

This is a personal blog run by a human-shaped woodland cryptid with an AuDHD brain.

☾ A field guide to this little corner of the woods

☾ Back at Camp:

☾ Lost in the Woods:
For the strange, the spooky, the nostalgic, and the inexplicable. Wandering thoughts, eerie little discoveries, and anything that feels like it belongs beneath a full moon.

☾ Curiosity Cabinet:
Special interests, video games, banjo, random hobbies, new obsessions, and whatever else my brain decides is urgently important this week.

The woods are lovely, and the creatures are friendly.

…mostly.
